Professor Named ‘Teacher of the Year’ by Class of 2015

Daniel Sweeney, S.J., Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, has been named Teacher of the Year by The University of Scranton’s class of 2015.

The award honors a faculty member who maintains high standards of academic excellence and fairness, and through enthusiasm and dedication, inspires the interest of students in a field of education. The award was instituted by the academic support committee of the University’s Faculty Senate in 1996.

Since 2009, Fr. Sweeney has taught classes in American government, European politics and international relations at the University. He is also the faculty moderator of the University’s Knights of Columbus, chaplain to the men’s lacrosse team and chaplain-in-residence in Redington Hall.

Prior to coming to The University of Scranton, Fr. Sweeney was an adjunct faculty member at Boston College, where he served as an assistant to the executive vice president and on several committees. In addition, he has published academic papers and book reviews, and he has made presentations at conferences.

Also serving as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Fr. Sweeney teaches at the Air Force Chaplain Corps College at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina.

Fr. Sweeney earned a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England, a master’s degree in philosophy from Fordham University in New York City, an M.Div. from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California, and a bachelor’s degree in government from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
