Scranton Brass Orchestra To Perform June 21
Trombone soloist Vincent Gardner will perform with The Scranton Brass Orchestra on Sunday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center at The University of Scranton. Admission is free, and the performance is open to the public.

The Scranton Brass Orchestra, sponsored and presented by The University of Scranton and under the direction of Cheryl Y. Boga and Mark Gould, is comprised of 29 professional brass and percussion players from the region. Boga serves as the director of performance music at The University of Scranton, a position she has held for more than 30 years. Gould was principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 1974-2003 and has been on the faculty of The Juilliard School since 1982. Additionally, he joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in September 2004 and currently chairs the brass department there. He is also the director of the New York Trumpet Ensemble.
During his college years, Gardner caught the ear of Mercer Ellington, who hired him for his first professional job. After completing a world tour with Grammy Award winning artist Lauryn Hill in 2000, he joined Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, with whom he currently serves as lead trombonist. Gardner also serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School, Michigan State University, Florida State University and The New School in New York City, and has participated in a wide variety of educational outreach events with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Gardner is also an accomplished composer and arranger, who has many arrangements for the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra and other ensembles to his credit. In 2009, he was commissioned by Jazz At Lincoln Center to write “The Jesse B. Semple Suite,” which is a 60-minute musical suite centered around the short stories of Langston Hughes. In addition to having recorded six CDs as a lead trombonist, Gardner has served as a sideman on numerous notable recordings. He has also performed, toured and/or recorded with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Count Basie Orchestra, Bobby McFerrin, Harry Connick, Jr., Frank Foster, The Saturday Night Live Band, Chaka Kahn, A Tribe Called Quest, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, McCoy Tyner, Illinois Jacquet, Jon Faddis, Tommy Flanagan, Matchbox 20, Jimmy Heath and others.
Gardner and Gould will also be among a number of internationally acclaimed artist/teachers participating in the fifth annual Scranton Brass Seminar, which will be held at the University from Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26. The seminar is an intensive, one-week summer program for intermediate to advanced high school, college or adult brass players and teachers.
