Universities Host Social Justice in the Information Society Speaker Series

The University of Scranton and Marywood University will host two live virtual presentations in April as part of The Social Justice in the Information Society Speaker Series. The presentations are free and open to the public. Each presentation will be followed by dessert reception and a question and answer session facilitated by a local scholar.

On Wednesday, April 8, Zeynep Tufekci, Ph.D., assistant professor of information and library science at The University of North Carolina, will discuss “New Civic Spaces.” The lecture, which begins at 6 p.m. in Swartz Center at Marywood University, will examine the key issues concerning platforms like Facebook and Google, such as algorithms and gatekeeping. Sarah Kenehan, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy at Marywood University, will serve as facilitator.

On Monday, April 13, Attorney Marvin Ammori will discuss “The Net Neutrality Debate.” A legal expert, Ammori will speak about both the substance and the politics of net neutrality from his point of view as one of the key leaders in Washington, D.C., who is working to ensure network neutrality remains the law of the land. The discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in the Moskovitz Theater of the Denaples Center at The University of Scranton. Joseph Casabona, adjunct professor of computing sciences at The University of Scranton, will serve as facilitator.

These events have been made possible through the Marywood University and University of Scranton Cooperative Grant. The grant supported the four-part 2014-2015 speaker series that focused on social justice in the information society.
