University of Scranton Alumni Join Together for Day of Service

Members of The University of Scranton community will continue to live their Jesuit education by being “men and women for others” as they join students, parents and friends on Saturday, March 21, for the sixth annual “Scranton Day of Service.” Participants will volunteer their time painting, cleaning, preparing meals or providing other services at 11 local services sites organized by nine Scranton alumni clubs in eight states and the District of Columbia.

The Scranton Alumni Club of New England will inspect and sort donations for children in homeless or low-income situations through the Cradles to Crayons program in Brighton, Massachusetts. Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12 with essential items they need for home, school and play. Volunteers will work from 10 a.m. to noon. The site coordinator is Tara Cleary ’04.

The Scranton Alumni Club of the Midwest will clean, paint and organize classrooms at the Bridgeport Catholic Academy in Chicago, Illinois from 9 a.m. to noon.  The project coordinator is Lauren Hahn ’11. Members of this club will also volunteer in the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry of Madison, Wisconsin, stocking food pantry shelves, sorting donations and serving as hosts for clients. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The site coordinator is Melanie Preston, Ph.D. ’04.

The Scranton Alumni Club of the Chesapeake will team up with The sixth Branch, a local community service group, to clean up Ambrose Kennedy Park in Baltimore City, Maryland.  Volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The site coordinator is Christy Meyer Bric ’93.

The Scranton Alumni Club of Washington, D.C., will prepare meals at D.C. Central Food Kitchen from 9 a.m. to noon. The site coordinator is Joy Oliver ’02.  In addition, the Scranton Alumni Club of Washington, D.C., will help bag oatmeal, rice and beans at the Arlington Food Assistance Center in Arlington, Virginia. They will volunteer from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The site coordinator is P.J. Tabit ’10.

The Scranton Alumni Club of Lehigh Valley will prepare and serve breakfast at the Allentown Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter. The volunteers will cook, serve, clean up and assist with shelf stocking from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Immediately following the project Rev. Mark Searles ’08 will celebrate Mass for volunteers and others from the alumni community at Sacred Heart Church of Allentown. The site coordinator is Dave Erdman ’81, P’09.

The Scranton Alumni Club of Northeast Pennsylvania will assist elderly residents at St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania, from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will escort residents to the activity room where they will assist and join in some games and other activities. The site coordinators are Bill Dempsey ’07 and Tracy Bannon ’84, P’10,’12,’13,’15.

The Scranton Alumni Club of New Jersey will help at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey in Hillside from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Volunteers will sort food items, stock shelves, help in the Kathleen’s Closet thrift shop and stock the shelves with school supplies in the Tools 4 Schools Resource Center. The site coordinators are Joanna Gallagher ’90, Mike Short ’99 and Eric Brophy ’92.

The Scranton Alumni Club of New York will paint the inside of Liberty Avenue Middle School in Brooklyn, New York, alongside the students of the school. During the project, which runs from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers will be paired with students to talk about their school experiences. The site coordinator is Luisa Angioletti P’15.

The Scranton Alumni Club of Philadelphia will work in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Jasper Street in Philadelphia, unloading trucks of furniture, moving merchandise and cleaning the store. Two shifts, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from noon to 4 p.m., are available for volunteers. The site coordinator is Mare McKeever ’10.
