University Students Praised for Heroism Shown in Tragic Event

Nov 25, 2014

Three University students are being hailed as heroes in news stories for the bravery they exhibited in saving a 9-year-old boy who fell into the icy waters of Roaring Brook on Sunday afternoon. The boy accidentally fell into the stream while walking with his father and 2-year-old brother. The boy’s father jumped into the steam to save him.

University freshmen Cesar Garcia and Michael Frawley, who were on a trail nearby, dove into the water to rescue the boy and his father. University sophomore Brian Teed, who was also nearby, stayed on shore with the 2-year-old.

The 9-year-old was rescued. His father, Robert Kehoe Jr., did not survive.

“We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of Robert Kehoe Jr., who passed away trying to rescue his son. At the same time, we applaud and celebrate the selfless heroism of Brian, Michael and Cesar for their quick actions that saved a young life. This was truly an example of love in action,” said University of Scranton President Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., in a Thanksgiving message to the University community.

The University students were praised for their heroism and interviewed in news reports on WBRE TV-news and the Scranton Times-Tribune

Garcia is an exercise science major from Ronkonkoma, New York. Frawley, also an exercise science major, is from Hamburg, New York. Teed is a biochemistry major from Newark, Delaware.
