Art Exhibit Showcases Liberal Arts Education of University Students

             University of Scranton students will showcase their creativity and artistic ability at the Hope Horn Gallery’s final exhibition of the academic year. The student exhibition runs from Sunday, April 27, to Friday, May 9. A public reception will be held Friday, May 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with downtown Scranton’s First Fridays event.

            Darlene Miller-Lanning, Ph.D., director of the university’s Hope Horn Gallery, believes the student exhibit creates a memorable event each year because of the education provided by the Jesuit institution.

“A lot of good art has liberal arts ideas behind it,” Dr. Miller-Lanning said. “It has deep traditions and associations, references and metaphors. University students have a solid background in ideas because – whether you’re a science student or business student at the University – you have a foundation in liberal arts.”

            Students are allowed to submit pieces that have been created for University-related projects and assignments as well as independent works created with no affiliation to the school. Student works displayed in previous years have included paintings, sculptures, three-dimensional designs and drawings.

Dr. Miller-Lanning said the main aspect to a submission’s acceptance is the creativity behind it.

            “Creativity is a way of thinking,” Dr. Miller-Lanning said. “You can think creatively about anything and that is happening here on campus.”

            The Hope Horn Gallery hours are noon until 4 p.m. Sunday through Friday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. All exhibits at the gallery are free of charge and open to the public.
