The University of Scranton and Pennsylvania American Water Sponsor Environmental Projects for Area Elementary, Middle and High School Students

            The University of Scranton and Pennsylvania American Water will sponsor an environmental art and essay exhibition for area students during Earth Day activities planned in April. Submissions will be showcased and participants acknowledged at Evening of Environmental Science event on Thursday, April 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Loyola Science Center. The event, which is open to the public, will include interactive science experiments and displays presented by University students and faculty, refreshments and an evening astronomy observation (weather permitting).

            The event will showcase the artwork submitted by area students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades participating in Pennsylvania American Water’s 12th annual Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest. The artwork submitted through the contest will reflect positive messages about why watersheds are valuable and ways protect them. Submissions must be sent to 800 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, Penna., 17033, by April 11 (new deadline).

            The event will also showcase Essay Contest submissions. Students in grades 7 to 12 can submit essays that address the theme “Water: Our Most Precious Resource.” Seventh and eighth grade student essays must be between 200 and 400 words. Students in grades 9 to 12 must submit essays between 300 and 500 words. All essays must address a current threat to water, explain the impact of the threat or issue, and articulate a reasonable plan of action to address the concern. Submissions must be sent to The University of Scranton, Provost Office, 800 Linden Street, Scranton, Penna., 18510, by April 11 (new deadline).
