Hundred Years of Promoting Healthier Community Celebrated in Exhibit
In 1912, the District Nursing Association, today known as the Visiting Nurses Association of Lackawanna County, was officially chartered to work independently. One hundred years later, the association’s continuing efforts toward promoting a healthier community will be celebrated through The Hope Horn Gallery exhibit “The Visiting Nurses Association of Scranton: One Hundred Years,” on display from Monday, March 26, through Friday, March 30, and from Monday, April 16, through Friday, May 4.
Darlene Miller-Lanning, Ph.D., director of The Hope Horn Gallery, said the visiting nurses were chosen as the theme of this exhibit because of their contributions to the area.
“This show is tied into women’s history,” Dr. Miller-Lanning said. “Historically, women were very influential in areas such as education and healthcare. The Visiting Nurses Association’s 100th anniversary is an opportunity to link women’s history together with local history.”
Josephine Dunn, Ph.D., professor of art history at The University of Scranton, and Marian Farrell, Ph.D., professor of nursing at The University of Scranton, will present a lecture about the exhibit in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall on Friday, March 30, from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by a public reception at The Hope Horn Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. The date coincides with the same week the Visiting Nurses were officially formed.
In addition, The Hope Horn Gallery is offering figure-drawing workshops based on the Visiting Nurses exhibit. Participants will use basic pencil techniques to draw models. School and community groups may call to schedule times.
The Hope Horn Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Hyland Hall, is open Sunday through Friday, from noon to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 6 to 8 p.m. For additional information, contact The Hope Horn Gallery at 941-4214.
“A Visiting Nurse Helps Barbara Zigmont Kumpus with her Triplets, Mary, Marsella, and Madeline” will be among the pieces featured in the exhibit “The Visiting Nurses Association of Scranton: One Hundred Years” on display in The University of Scranton’s Hope Horn Gallery from March 26 through March 30 and April 16 through May 4.
