Koval Grippo’s “The Scent of Sunrise Waits Patiently at Dusk” will be among the pieces in the “Sacred Birch: Paintings by Koval Grippo” exhibit of abstract nature art on display at The University of Scranton’s Hope Horn Gallery from Friday, Feb. 3, through Friday, March 2.

Koval Grippo has studied in Philadelphia, holds an art degree from Keystone College, and has lived and worked in the inner cities of Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. By looking at her artwork, however, it’s easy to tell the effect growing up in the Pocono Mountains had on her.

The Hope Horn Gallery will display Grippo’s work “Sacred Birch: Paintings by Koval Grippo,” from Friday, Feb. 3, through Friday, March 2. Darlene Miller-Lanning, Ph.D., director of The Hope Horn Gallery, said Grippo’s artwork was chosen for display because of the unique perspective Grippo gives to a classic theme.

“Her artwork is interesting because of her ideas of landscape as an abstraction, not just a representation,” said Dr. Miller-Lanning. “It’s her take on a century-old idea on the force within nature and landscapes.”

A former resident of North Pocono, Grippo’s main interest lies in capturing a moment in an abstract way through a combination of color, texture and movement.

Grippo will discuss the exhibit at a lecture on Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. in Brennan Hall. A  reception will immediately follow from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Hope Horn Gallery, as part of downtown Scranton’s First Friday. Both the lecture and reception are open to the public, free of charge.

In addition, The Hope Horn Gallery is offering abstract painting workshops based on themes found in “The Sacred Birch: Paintings by Koval Grippo.” Participants will use acrylic paints to produce abstract paintings based on forms found in nature. School and community groups may contact The Hope Horn Gallery to schedule a workshop date.

The Hope Horn Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Hyland Hall, is open Sunday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. For additional information, contact The Hope Horn Gallery at 941-4214.
