Dominick Farinacci to Perform with The University of Scranton Jazz Band
Acclaimed New York City-based jazz trumpeter Dominick Farinacci will perform a special Halloween weekend concert with The University of Scranton Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center.
Acclaimed young trumpet sensation Dominick Farinacci will perform a special Halloween weekend concert with The University of Scranton Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the University’s Houlihan-McLean Center. Audience members are encouraged to arrive in costume.
The program will feature a variety of big band selections including W. C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues,” Duke Ellington’s “Portrait of Louis Armstrong” and “Boy Meets Horn,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust,” and many other selections.
Farinacci, a 28-year-old New York City-based jazz trumpeter, is the recipient of the International New Star Award (along with Diana Krall and Christian McBride) and the Disney New Star Award. He won first-place honors in the Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition and is touring in support of his second U.S. solo release, “Dawn of Goodbye” (Eone Music).
Farinacci has headlined at many major festivals and clubs both nationally and internationally, including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Birdland, the Detroit International Jazz Festival and both the Toronto and Montreal Jazz Festivals in Canada. He appeared at Severance Hall with the Cleveland Orchestra for the organization’s 2010 Gala, and has been newly appointed as the 2011-2012 artist-in-residence at the Creative Center for the Arts in Cleveland, a new state-of-the-art educational facility that houses the Tri-C Jazz Studies Program and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Archives.
Farinacci has toured Japan regularly since 2003 and has recorded seven critically acclaimed CDs there. In addition, he has performed in Korea, Switzerland, Italy and the United Kingdom. He has performed and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Barron, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Heath and Benny Golson.
Quincy Jones said “this kid is 360 degrees” after Farinacci performed for him in Bel Air. Upon releasing his first U.S. CD (Lovers, Tales & Dances), he was invited to perform in London, opening for British stars Jamie Cullum and Jeff Beck.
The University of Scranton Jazz Ensemble is a 25-member big band comprised of University students from majors spanning the curriculum. The group has had the privilege of performing with and learning from many of the nation’s most respected jazz musicians, and many internationally renowned jazz artists have been featured as guest performers with the ensemble.
