The University of Scranton Named Among Nation’s Best Colleges for 10th Year
The University of Scranton has been listed among The Princeton Review’s “The Best 376 Colleges” for a decade. The 2012 edition of the guidebook became available on Aug. 2, 2011.
For the 10th consecutive year, The Princeton Review named The University of Scranton among the select schools in the nation profiled in “The Best 376 Colleges,” which became available in bookstores on Aug. 2, 2011. The 2012 edition of the college guidebook lists just 15 percent of the nation’s 2,500 four-year colleges and universities.
“Each of our 376 best colleges offers outstanding academics,” said Robert Franek, the book’s author and senior vice president/publishing for The Princeton Review. According to Franek, academics is the primary criteria for selecting the schools to be included in the book based on institutional data collected about schools, campus visits, feedback gathered from students attending the schools, and the opinions of The Princeton Review’s staff and 28-member National College Counselor Advisory Board.
The guidebook includes detailed profiles of the selected 376 best colleges and ratings in eight categories, as well as rankings of the top 20 schools in 62 lists based on The Princeton Review’s survey of more than 122,000 students.
In the 2012 edition, Scranton students praised the University’s Jesuit education, saying “if you come here, expect to be challenged to become a better person, to develop a strong concern for the poor and marginalized and to grow spiritually and intellectually.” Students were also quoted saying “social issues are huge” and are “taught in the classroom, and students spend a lot of time volunteering.” Scranton’s liberal arts curriculum, premed, occupational therapy and other science programs were also praised.
The University of Scranton was included in three of The Princeton Review’s “Best 376 Colleges” rankings, including “Best Campus Food” (12) and “Most Religious Students (19).
In addition to the 10 years The University of Scranton has been listed among the best colleges in the nation by The Princeton Review, Scranton has also been nationally recognized for excellence through rankings in U.S. News & World Report, which has rated Scranton among the top 10 Best Regional Universities in the North for 17 consecutive years; among just 86 schools in the nation recognized for “Strong Commitment to Teaching” for two years; and among “Great Schools at a Great Price” for the past seven years. In July, The Huffington Post ranked The University of Scranton sixth among the “friendliest colleges” in the nation.
