The University to Welcome Largest Incoming Class in its History

Aug 22, 2011
The University of Scranton is preparing to welcome the largest incoming undergraduate class in its history – 1,059 members of the Class of 2015. The incoming students will arrive on campus on Saturday, Aug. 27. In addition, Scranton will also welcome 80 transfer students and 200 new graduate students this weekend.

The undergraduate Class of 2015 surpasses the Jesuit university’s previous record of 1,034 incoming students, set just two years ago.

And, that’s not the only record being broken. The Class of 2015 was drawn from 9,045 applicants, which is the largest applicant pool in the Jesuit school’s history. This is the first time that the number of Scranton applicants surpassed 9,000 and marks the ninth time since 2000 that the University has set a record for undergraduate applications. The University has seen its applicant pool increase by more than 15 percent since last year, and nearly triple since 2000.

The Class of 2015 has an average SAT score of 1,127 and includes 15 valedictorians and salutatorians with many representing local high schools, such as North Pocono, West Scranton, Pittston Area, Mid Valley and Valley View. Incoming students represent 443 high schools and 15 states including Illinois, Texas, New Mexico, Florida, Maryland and New York, as well as Ireland and China. Twenty percent are from northeast Pennsylvania. Occupational therapy is the major showing the largest growth.

The Class of 2015 includes 73 legacy children of University of Scranton alumni, including 11 legacy students from alumni couples.

The Fall Welcome program will include a New Student Convocation, at which the Class of 2015 banner will be introduced. Fall Welcome will also include a class photo, residence hall and commuter meetings, an alumni legacy reception and other activities.

An orientation for graduate and non-traditional students will take place on Sunday, Aug. 28. Incoming graduate students represent a dozen states and foreign countries, including Saudi Arabia, India and Kenya and four Fulbright teaching assistantship scholars from Taiwan, France, Japan and Argentina.

Classes for the fall semester begin on Monday, Aug. 29.
