Carnival of Chinese Opera Comes to Scranton
Area middle and high school students can learn about Asian culture through a free, interactive “Carnival of Chinese Opera” offered by the Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company at The University of Scranton on Thursday, April 14, from noon until 2:30 p.m. Call (570) 941-6200 for additional information.
Area middle and high school students can learn about Chinese Opera through a free, interactive “carnival” offered by the world-renowned Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company at The University of Scranton.
The “Carnival of Chinese Opera” will include a demonstration lecture of the best of Chinese Opera, brief opera lessons on body movement, martial art and face painting, and video screenings of four essential roles that appear in the operas, as well as a contest with prizes.
The event will take place on Thursday, April 14, from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the DeNaples Center. The event is open students at area schools and colleges and members of the public, however reservations are required to attend. The Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company is in Scranton as part of its four-city U.S. tour of “Bond,” an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice,” which will be performed on Friday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Scranton Cultural Center. In addition to their performance in Scranton, their tour includes performance at the Shakespeare Association of America conference in Seattle, Wash.; at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.; and at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.
The tour is brought to you by the Asian Studies Program at the University of Scranton and has been made possible by generous grants from the Taiwanese government and the assistance from the Taipei Cultural Center of Taiwan Embassy (also known as Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, TECO) in New York.
