Scranton Places Second in Math Competition

      A team from The University of Scranton placed second in the 2010 Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Competition. Team members are University of Scranton juniors Alex Borselli of Phoenix, Ariz., and Michael Scully of Cranford, N.J., and University of Scranton High School Scholars Program participant Keenan Monks of Hazleton. 

      Thirty-four teams competed, including a second team of University of Scranton freshmen Ryan Kwolek of Blakely, J.C. McNamara of Yardville, N.J., and Sandra Perry of Dunmore. Both Scranton teams were coached by Kenneth Monks, Ph.D., professor of mathematics at The University of Scranton, and Thomas Leong, math specialist for the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

      The 94 students participating also competed individually. Three Scranton students placing in the top 20 in the individual competition were: Monks, who third place overall individual; Scully, who tied for fourth place overall individual; and McNamara, who tied for 18th place overall individual.
