Zimbabwe Pianist To Perform at Schemel Forum Concert

Mar 22, 2010

Pianist Jeanette Micklem, one of Zimbabwe’s leading musical artists, will perform as part of The University of Scranton’s Schemel Forum Concert Program. Micklem will present “A Schumann Recital: On the 200th Anniversary of his Birth and Insights into Zimbabwe from an Artist’s Perspective” on Sunday, April 18, at 5 p.m. in the Houlihan McLean Center. A “meet the artist” reception will follow.

Micklem grew up in Zimbabwe, and after earning degrees from London University, the British Royal Schools of Music and the Royal College of Music in London, Micklem returned to the African country. There, she earned renown as a performer, accompanist and teacher, and has since performed throughout Africa and around the globe. Her extensive repertoire includes 18 composers and 27 different works.

Micklem’s concert is free to Schemel Forum Members. Tickets for non-members cost $20 for individuals and $30 for couples. Reservations are required to attend. Space is limited and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

To register, contact Kym Fetsko, events coordinator, at (570) 941-7816 or fetskok2@scranton.edu. For more information on programs and memberships, contact Sondra Myers, director of the Schemel Forum at The University of Scranton, at (570) 941-4089 or myerss2@scranton.edu.

The Schemel Forum is a program of participatory learning experiences aimed at cultivating the intellect and the imagination through study and discussion of classical texts and current policies, from the arts, history and philosophy to technology and theology. Founded in 2006 through generous gifts to the Rev. George Schemel, S.J., Fund, the forum has grown quickly from a handful of informal lectures to a comprehensive enrichment program of study, dialogue, performances and special events. Session fees vary by program.
