University of Scranton Names New Director of Public Safety
The University of Scranton has named Donald J. Bergmann as director of public safety/university police chief.
Bergmann has two decades of experience in law enforcement serving as a patrol officer, sergeant, watch commander and captain. Most recently, he served as the zone commander/police bureau captain at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in Rochester, N.Y. As one of three zone commanders, he shared responsibility for a department of 1,400 with an operating budget of $110 million. Bergmann had jurisdiction for one third of the county. His area included the Greater Rochester International Airport and two colleges.
In addition, Bergmann has experience organizing and managing a Community Emergency Preparedness Response Program and has conducted numerous presentations to community organizations about crime prevention and safety. He has assisted with the coordination of security for two U.S. Presidential visits and has served as an instructor for the State of New York Municipal Police Training Council.
He also served on the Multi-jurisdiction Crisis Intervention Task Force, Emergency Services Committee, Monroe County Violence Consortium and Interoperable Communications Committee.
Bergmann earned a master’s degree in criminal justice administration from Keuka College and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Northeastern University. He has completed numerous professional training courses in areas such as Homeland Security Incident Command, prevention and response to campus emergencies, HAZMAT training, bullying prevention, identity crime, workplace safety, workplace harassment and discrimination, total quality management leadership and police supervision.
