International students introduced area elementary school children to the culture of Turkey as part of The University of Scranton's celebration of International Education Week (Nov. 16-20).
The University of Scranton will host a presentation by Eric Piza, a geographic information system specialist from the Newark Police Department, about "GIS in Law Enforcement: A Problem Solving Analysis of the Newark Police Department." The lecture, which is open to the public free of charge, will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 2 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall.
University of Scranton students organized a Thanksgiving Food Drive that provided turkey dinners - complete with all the trimmings - to more than 150 families in need in the local community. Scranton student Elizabeth Pulice (far right), a Pennsylvania Scholar in Service, helped organize the drive and the legion of students that assembled and delivered the baskets to the families through the university's Leahy Community Health and Family Center and the United Neighborhood Centers.
University of Scranton President Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., has joined a new "Presidents' Trust" formed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to collectively make the case for liberal education and its value in today's world. The Presidents' Trust is a leadership group of 82 college presidents and chancellors within AAC&U's national initiative, Liberal Education and America's Promise (LEAP): Excellence for Everyone as a Nation Goes To College.
More than 200 people participated in an AIDS Walk organized by The University of Scranton's Center for Health Education and Wellness to raise funds to support care of AIDS patients provided by the Scranton Temple Health Center. Students, faculty and staff learned Swahili and took salsa dance lessons while student representatives from countries including Korea, India, Thailand, Mexico and El Salvador provided cultural and geographical information and shared native artwork at the 2009 Diversity Fair. More than 200 participated in the program intended to raise awareness of diversity on Scranton's campus.
The University of Scranton has named Thomas MacKinnon as the executive assistant and chief of staff to the president. MacKinnon will assist The University of Scranton President Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., in the planning and implementation of both long and short team goals, as well as the execution of daily management priorities.

The Hope Horn Gallery will host the second annual exhibition of The University of Scranton Photography Club from Nov. 30 to Dec 11. The exhibit, entitled "In Color," will display photographs taken by students in the photography club, and all photographs will emphasize color.

The University of Scranton's Kania School of Management has named Rose Sebastianelli, Ph.D. and Edward Scahill, Ph.D., Alperin Teaching Fellows for 2009/10 in recognition of achievement and exceptional teaching. This award, which began in 2000, was created through the Alperin Endowment Fund.
