University of Scranton Awards President’s Fellowships to Students

Eight University of Scranton students were awarded a President's Fellowship for Summer Research for 2009.

Lee Ashlin of Dalton worked with Meghan Rich, Ph.D., Scranton, assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice, to study "Change in the Electric City: Community Views on Downtown Revitalization in Scranton."

Richard Brzozowski of Pittston worked with John Deak, Ph.D., Clarks Summit, associate professor of chemistry, to study "The Effects of Ethylene Oxide Chains on Molecular Interactions of Water in Nonionic Reverse Micelles."

Nathan Carr of Plains worked with Robert Smith, Ph.D., Harford, associate professor of biology, to study "Special Plumage Characteristics of Breeding Gray Catbirds in Northeastern Pennsylvania."

Kristen Fenocchi of Jessup worked with George Gomez, Ph.D, Roaring Brook Township, associate professor of biology, to study "The Effects of Reactive Oxygen Species on Myelin in the Nervous System: Implications for Neurodegenerative Diseases."

Adriana Healey of Edwardsville worked with Timothy Foley, Ph.D., Clarks Summit, associate professor of chemistry, to study "Characterization of the Oxidation of Thiols on the Enzyme Triose Phosphate Isomerase: A Possible Link between Oxidative Stress and Glucose Metabolism in the Brain."

Benjamin Redan of Tunkhannock worked with Joe Vinson, Ph.D., Dalton, professor of chemistry, to study "Mechanistic Study of the Legume's Health Benefits: What are the Active Ingredients for Optimizing Health?"

William Woody of Bryn Mawr worked with Cyrus Olsen, Ph.D., Scranton, assistant professor of theology/religious studies, to study "Furthering Science-Religious Dialogues: On Shared Holistic Concepts."

Mary Zorechak of Peckville worked with Rob Waldeck, Ph.D., Scranton, associate professor of biology, to study "Enhanced Functional Recovery and Regeneration of Axons Following Spinal Cord Injury in Goldfish."
