Sustainability Lessons Lead Scranton's Earth Week Events

Saturday, April 18, (Arbor Day)
E-Cycling - 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The University of Scranton will collect electronics for recycling. The event is being organized by SIFE, Physical Plant, Apex Waste Services/Waste Management and Efollet Bookstore. Linden Street at Monroe Avenue. A fee of $5 is requested to help cover the cost to recycle the electronics. Call 941-6267.

Sunday, April 19
1 p.m. City Sweep, The Student Government of The University of Scranton will organize student volunteers in a clean-up project near campus. Call 941-7462.

Monday, April 20:

Tuesday, April 21:
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  - Earth Day Fair on the Dionne Campus Green. The Fair will have interactive games and information related to the environment, sustainable practices and will highlight faculty and student projects related to environmental issues.  Local green businesses and organizations will also participate. 7 p.m.  - Lecture by Paul Rogat Loeb, author of Soul of A Citizen, editor of The Impossible Will Take A Little While and affiliated scholar at Seattle's Center for Ethical Leadership, will discuss how individual citizens can organize at the grassroots level to address local, national and global sustainability issues. Nature Tours highlight the beautiful scenic areas of Scranton seen through the lens of experienced and knowledgeable guides. Short walks are suitable for beginners and people of all ages. Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

Saturday, April 25: 
10 a.m. Clean-up project in preparation for River Fest hosted by the Lackawanna River Corridor Association. Volunteers may bring gloves, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, weed whackers or any other tools, however, tools are not required and will be provided for you. Meet across the street from the Ice Box on the corner of Olive and Love streets or at Parker Street Bridge on the corner of Parker and Amelia streets. Call 347-6311.
10 a.m. - Mountain bike ride through the Nature Conservancy Preserve on Moosic Mountain, led by Alaina Dietz and Steve Kurilla. Sponsored by Sickler's Bike and Sport, Clarks Summit. Bikers should bring their own bike, a light snack and water. All level of bikers. FREE. Call 687-7432. Directions:  From I-81, take exit 187 for Carbondale/Route 6. Once on Route 6, go just over four miles. Take Exit 3 for Jessup, and travel south on Moosic Lake Road/Route 247 for about two miles. The entrance to the parking area will be on your left.
