Annual Volunteer & Service Learning Fair

Tuesday September 11th

DeNaples Center, McIlhenny Ballroom, 4th flr

The Community Outreach Office hosts a Volunteer and Service Learning Fair each September.  We invite local agencies to come to campus to recruit volunteers for their programs in areas such as health and hospice care, children and youth, elderly, social justice, food and housing programs, and hands on projects.  Student volunteers get the opportunity to meet directly with agency representatives and find out what types of service opportunities are available in the Scranton community, time commitments, and information about service learning.  Each year the fair is attended by over 70 agencies and 750 students.

For more information on the Volunteer and Service Fair, contact Ellen Judge at

F.I.R.S.T 2012

Forty incoming freshmen will be given the opportunity to participate in five days of service in the Scranton community immediately preceding Fall Welcome. Types of service include working with elementary school children, nursing home residents, and participating in a painting project. In the evening, we will stay at the University's beautiful Retreat Center at Chapman Lake. A team of eight upperclassmen will lead F.I.R.S.T., with a staff chaperone director.  Meals and reflections are also included involving faculty and staff.

The Community Outreach Office is committed to advancing the Jesuit tradition of forming men and women for others.  The programs sponsored by this office include food and clothing drives, domestic break trips, on campus activities and local community service.  Each element enables the students to express their faith in reflective service while responding to local and national needs.

The vision of The Community Outreach Office will be boldly driven by a shared commitment to excellence. We will provide a superior, transformational learning experience, preparing students who, in the words of Jesuit founder St. Ignatius Loyola, will "set the world on fire."

We are located on the 2nd floor of The DeNaples Student Center, room 205B.
