Windows 10 Self-Service Upgrade

You are eligible to upgrade if you are a faculty and staff member who is using a Dell Optiplex 3000 series desktop device that is not scheduled for replacement in 2017. The Optiplex 3000 series devices are the first to receive the upgrade because testing demonstrated this model will complete the upgrade more rapidly than older models. The Dell Optiplex 3000 series includes Dell Optiplex models 3010, 3020, 3040 and 3046. Laptops and older series desktops will be eligible for the self-service upgrade at a later date.
How to Upgrade
If you are eligible to upgrade you will see it available in your Software Center. Since the upgrade can exceed two hours and requires little interaction from you, we recommend that you start the upgrade at the end of the day. The bulk of the upgrade will be performed while you’re away from your desk.
Please follow these steps to upgrade your computer:
- Close all open programs
- Click on the Windows start button
- Navigate to All Programs > Microsoft System Center > Configuration Manager > Software Center
- From the Available Software tab, select the option for Windows 10 – 1607 – Upgrade
- Click the Install Selected button
- Confirm that you want to install the new operating system by selecting the Install Operating System button
In the hours that follow, the upgrade will commence through various stages and several restarts. When the Windows 10 upgrade is complete, you’ll be greeted with a new desktop image that displays the date and time.
Application Xtender (full desktop version used for scanners) is currently not supported on Windows 10. If you use this application, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
MS Office 2016 Macro Warning
Please be advised this upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 also includes an automatic upgrade from Microsoft Office 2013 to Microsoft Office 2016. If you use Word or Outlook customizations such as macros, autotext entries or styles, these customizations will not load in Microsoft Office 2016. This is caused by a file that has been renamed during the upgrade. Microsoft does offer a solution to this problem, however, this solution has not resolved this issue for all customers.
The Windows Store is an online marketplace for Windows 10 users to purchase and download universal Windows platform apps (both free and paid). To access the Store you need a Microsoft account (Please note: All scranton.edu accounts are considered Microsoft "work or school accounts" and can be used to access the Store).

Windows 10 Intro Training
Training for Windows 10 is available upon request. The introductory session will offer participants information about Windows 10 features and tips on windows and file management, desktop and systemwide customizations and keyboard shortcuts. All sessions will be held in Hyland Hall 402.
