If you’re wondering what you’ll do for fun in Scranton, the good news is that our students stay here on the weekends and have fun. We always have on-campus events, and there’s plenty to do in the surrounding area. If you want to get away, it’s easy to get to from Scranton to New York, Philadelphia and other major cities. What’s more, Scranton’s proximity to east coast cities creates exciting opportunities for internships and mentoring.
The Scranton area offers a multitude of options for having a great time with your friends. Whether you enjoy going to concerts, plays, movies, baseball or hockey games, you can find it all within a few minutes of our campus.
Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain is host to concerts by national music acts. Mohegan Sun Arena has a variety of events to offer including concerts and professional ice skating, and is also home to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey team, the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Scranton Cultural Center features off Broadway shows, music and stand-up comedy performances and other special events. It is also a site to see in it’s own right as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (Triple A Affiliate of the New York Yankees) offer a fun night of professional baseball within a 5-minute drive of campus.
If movies are your thing, you have several options for checking out the latest releases – Cinemark Theatre has 20 screens so you’re bound to find something new to watch and Marquee Cinemas Steamtown 8 theater is within walking distance of campus.
The Pocono Northeast has numerous state and local parks, lakes, ski resorts, water parks and much more. There are also miles of trails to hike or to take a bike ride, so explore to your heart's content! For information on area state parks and trails, visit the PA Dept of Conservation & Natural Resources website. Visit www.skipa.com to find a new slope to conquer, or head to our local mountain. In the winter, try out Sno Mountain's ski trails, or in the summer visit their water park, Sno Cove.
Within walking distance of the University is Nay Aug Park, with walking trails, picnic areas, two Olympic-sized swimming pools and waterslide complex number among the attractions. The Everhart Museum is also located within the park. A rock-strewn gorge and waterfalls add to the allure and have been named a National Natural Landmark.
There are three shopping malls within five miles of our campus. The Shoppes at Montage is the newest outdoor shopping center with over 50 retail stores and restaurants. The Viewmont Mall is located about five miles from campus in the popular Dickson City shopping area where, in addition to the great stores in the mall, you can find national chains like TJ Maxx, Sam's Club, Target and the Olive Garden, just to name a few.
If you prefer the downtown experience, we have that too! Downtown Scranton is within walking distance of campus and has a variety of independent clothing stores and boutiques, as well as numerous restaurants, coffee shops and galleries. Downtown Scranton is also home to The Mall at Steamtown where you can find everything from clothing to electronics. While you're there check out the Welcome to Scranton sign as seen in the opening credits of the Emmy award-winning NBC sitcom "The Office".
Scranton is conveniently located within easy driving distance of the most popular east coast cities. You can get to New York City, Philadelphia and Syracuse in just two hours. Boston and Washington, D.C., are less than five hours away.
Scranton's proximity to major cities places you in an ideal location for internships with leading businesses, including AXA Equitable, Citigroup, KPMG and UBS Financial Services in New York City, and Pricewaterhousecoopers in Philadelphia and New York, to name a few. With more than 33,000 alumni living in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Virginia alone, you'll have plenty of mentoring and networking opportunities with Scranton Royals.
