Dr. Len Tischler

Len Tischler Professor of Management
Management / Marketing Department
Kania School of Management

Dr. Len Tischler is Professor of Management at the University of Scranton and former Chair of the Management/Marketing Department. He has been at the University since 1990.

Prior to joining the University Len taught at the University of Maryland, College Park, and at Howard University. Prior to that he was a CPA (Certified Public Accountant), heading his own CPA firm, was in sales and marketing consulting, was a social worker, a community organizer, a government worker, and a meditation teacher.

Len received his B.A. in Political Science with concentrations in Community Organizing and Philosophy at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana. He received his M.B.A. in Business Strategy and his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Beginning as a social worker in the Army, a community organizer, a government worker, and a spiritual teacher, Len became curious about why some people and organizations become "successful" in the business world while others don't. In order to answer this question he moved into the business world first in sales and marketing, then in accounting, and finally returned to school to get a Ph.D. in management.

Still trying to answer the question, Len's areas of focus in business management are personal development, spirituality in organizations, creativity in organizations, quality and lean management, and sustainability. These areas seem to provide some answers and methods for success. His background as a social worker, his studies of organizational behavior, and his other life experiences gave him insights that help him to offer personal development opportunities. He studied spirituality under a number of teachers over 40+ years, especially under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and has taught meditation to hundreds of people. He has been applying these learnings to business for 15 years, helping to open up the field of spirituality in organizations. He can lead DICOR workshops on creativity in organizations. He studied quality management under W. Edwards Deming and has extended his knowledge into the lean management area, offering organizations ways to improve their success. He has been learning sustainability principles over the past several years and has been integrating them into his management classes as well.

Dr. Tischler has consulted to more than 130 companies. He has also published one book, 25+ articles, presented 25+ papers, given 100+ speeches, led corporate training programs, led retreats, and presented workshops on such diverse topics as personal growth, individual spirituality, spirituality in organizations, total quality management, lean management, sustainability, and other topics.

Len lives in San Jose, California, has two grown children and a granddaughter, and lives with his lovely life partner Jeaneen in phased retirement.
