As part of the Education for Justice series “Finding Justice After 9/11,” retired Army Colonel and Scranton alumnus Mark Volk ’77, G'80 talked about his experience at the Pentagon when a hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon under his third-floor office on Sept. 11, 2001.

“It pretty much felt like a train rumbling through the building,” said Volk to University of Scranton students on campus March 22.

As he and his co-workers began to evacuate the building, Volk said time slowed down, and it seemed he had minutes to make every decision. There were no major injuries on Volk’s floor. He and his coworkers made it out of the Pentagon five minutes before the third floor collapsed.

“Had we not left, I wouldn’t be here today,” he said.
