Information Update - Spring 2011

Staff Members "Get To Know Google" with Technology On Your Own Terms

Each semester, the Weinberg Memorial Library and the Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence (CTLE) offer a faculty and staff advancement series called "Technology on Your Own Terms." The series introduces University faculty and staff to emerging technologies in a hands-on environment, in order to encourage innovation in the workplace and in the classroom. The series continued in fall 2010 with a theme of "Get to Know Google," featuring workshops on four different Google services.
The semester began with instruction from Information Literacy Coordinator Bonnie Oldham on using Google's most popular service, its web search engine. Oldham demonstrated advanced search techniques and introduced session participants to two highly regarded search tools, Google Scholar and Google Books. "Get to Know Google" continued with a presentation on Google Docs from Tim Cannon, Ph.D., of the psychology and neuroscience departments. Dr. Cannon demonstrated several different document styles that can be used in Google Docs and related how he has used the service in his classes to collaborate with students. Digital Services Librarian Kristen Yarmey gave the next workshop, featuring the geolocation tools of Google Maps. Participants learned new ways of searching by geographic location and ended the workshop by creating their own custom maps. Finally, CTLE Associate Director Eugeniu Grigorescu introduced workshop attendees to Google Voice, calling his brother in Romania to demonstrate the international calling capabilities of the service.
With the campus now familiar with Google services, Technology On Your Own Terms will move on to other topics in spring 2011. Currently scheduled events are an "Insider's Guide to Smartphones" and an update on "The Changing Face of Facebook." Additionally, in April the library and CTLE will host experts from Best Buy for a e-reader and tablet computer "petting zoo," in which the University community will have the opportunity to try out the latest devices and consult with the Best Buy representatives about features and pricing.
