- Football at the University of Scranton: Gone But Not Forgotten
The University of Scranton's varsity football team officially disbanded in 1960 (with club football continuing until 1979), but here at the Weinberg Memorial Library, the history of Scranton football is alive and well, preserved in our University Archives. This year, the Library is proud to announce that the University of Scranton Football Collection has been digitized and is now available online at www.scranton.edu/library/football.
The collection, digitized in-house by hard-working Library staff members and student workers, includes over a thousand photographs of University of Scranton and St. Thomas College football teams, players, coaches, and games – as well as of the cheerleaders, bands, and fans who supported the team from the sidelines.
The collection also features a set of football game programs. Produced for each home game, the programs hold team rosters, statistics, and game analysis in addition to advertisements from local businesses. While the majority of the collection's photographs and programs come from the years 1900 through 1960, there are a few items from the 1970s club football team.
The Weinberg Memorial Library invites all alumni and University community members to browse and search the collection at www.scranton.edu/library/football. If you recognize a player, please let us know! While the Library has identified many of the photographs, some are still mysteries. You can contact the Digital Services Department at 570-941-7003.
