Services & Policies - Spring 2000

Laptops and Wireless Connections Arrive

In an effort to address the growing needs for computers to use by students in the Weinberg Memorial Library, four new Gateway laptop computers are ready for service in the Library. These state-of-the-art portable computers are fully equipped with the Microsoft Office 97 suite of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation products, along with an Internet browser. They are also equipped with either a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Library Systems, Desktop and Instructional Resources, and Network Resources jointly sponsor this pilot project.
Students who use these laptops will have the ability to travel to almost any area of the Library to take notes, write papers, and create classroom presentations. The third floor stack area is equipped with wireless technology by Breezecom enabling these computers to connect to the Internet without having to plug in to a hard-wired Internet connection. E-mail, web-browsing, accessing the library's databases, reading electronic reserves, doing course assignments, and a host of other Internet applications are available.
University students can check out a laptop from the Circulation Desk for a period of two hours upon presentation of a valid RoyalCard and signing the loan agreement. A full explanation of the Library's policies is found in
"About the Library," a link from the Library's home page.
