From The Library of The Central American University in San Salvador
This past summer Reference Librarian, Joe Fennewald. accompanied other faculty and staff from the University of Scranton and Scranton Preparatory School to El Salvador. In preparation of their trip, Mr. Fennewald contacted Dr. Katherine Miller, Directora de Biblioteca Universidad Centroamericana. She expressed the need for books, compact disks and records, art slides, and a computer scanner. Through the generosity of the Friends of the Library, the Library Director and staff, and the University faculty, books, disks and slides were obtained. > Full story
Laptops and Wireless Connections Scheduled

Software programs to prevent Internet users from accessing pornographic web sites or questionable newsgroups are rampant. Marketers of these products promise libraries a solution to problems they face when young patrons want to surf the web unattended. > Full story
Library Assistants' Day Celebrated
Each year on April 22nd library support staff is traditionally recognized for their many contributions in providing library services within their communities throughout the nation. > Full story
Computing Capability in the Pro Deo Room Enhanced
Eight new PCs have been installed in the Pro Deo Room as a complement to the existing PC Lab. These units are connected to the Campus Network and function just as do the lab units. Eight additional carrels have been equipped with ResNet access so that students may bring their own ResNet software-equipped laptops and connect as they do from other campus locations.
Football at the Library
Autumn is the time for football in the Heritage Room of Weinberg Memorial Library During summer 1997; the University Athletic Department donated 14 boxes of historical athletic records to the Fritz DavidsonUniversity Archives. > Full story
Emerald Library Now Available
The Weinberg Memorial Library began a subscription to the full-text journal package called the Emerald Library in April of this year. Similar in format to the already established services of IDEAL and Project Muse, the Emerald Library focuses on the content areas of management., human resources, information management, library and information science, operations, production and economics, training and education, quality, and engineering. > Full story
Genealogical Research on the Internet: America's Newest Hobby
Researching one's ancestors is an Internet use, which is rapidly gaining in popularity. When the Church of the Latterday Saints opened a web page (www.familysearch.org/) earlier this year it made international news, and the site was soon so swamped with users that it was nearly impossible for several weeks to log onto it. > Full story
Regional Online Union Catalog Funded
As part of a cooperative effort to build a regional union catalog and facilitate resource sharing in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Bibliographic Center (NEPBC) has been awarded Library Services & Technology Act funding to purchase the software and the web server required to establish a regional online union catalog. > Full story

Workshop Conducted for NRCI Staff
On Tuesday, August 3, 1999, twelve members of the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute staff attended a seminar in Room 306 of the Weinberg Memorial Library. Betsey Moylan, Reference Coordinator, conducted the workshop that explained how to access many of the Library's health related databases from their offices and homes. Using the terminals in the classroom. the staff members searched the Online Catalog, First Search (for Medline, WorldCat, and Wilson Select), Expanded Academic Index, IDEAL, and CARL Uncover. Betsey demonstrated the various options for printing, e-mailing or downloading the full-text articles available in each service and introduced advanced searching techniques for conducting more accurate and refined results. A similar workshop was conducted in June for staff members from a number of offices on campus.

The Weinberg Memorial Library is very pleased to announce that The University of Scranton Board of Trustees Chair and University Alumnus Edward Leahy Jr., Esq. will he bringing a selection of his rare book collection to the University for exhibition next year.
