Computer Literacy Class Expanded

During the fall semester the library faculty entered a new phase in its evolution as part of the computer/information literacy program. As reported in previous newsletters, the library faculty has, since the 1994 summer semester, been teaching a library portion of the computer/information literacy program. The main emphasis of this lab was the Online Public Catalog. The library faculty was able to present to a small portion of those classes previously taught a second class. This new lecture and lab focused on the different databases that are accessible to students in the Weinberg Memorial Library. This was quite an undertaking since there are a number of databases available, they are found in a variety of different areas, and there is little standardization among them. Students were surprised to learn that no one single database (information product) can satisfy all of their research needs. In addition, they were surprised at how many of these databases are available in our library. The hope is that in the future the library can incorporate this second class as a regular part of this program.
