Information Literacy Stipends

“My course was strengthened by incorporating information literacy components, and this program has the potential to strengthen any course content.”  — Dona Carpenter

Purpose

The purpose of the stipends is to integrate information literacy into academic courses to develop the information literacy skills of students, such as differentiating between primary and secondary sources or constructing a search strategy.

In 2016, the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) approved a new document, which replaces the 2000 Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. This Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education provides approaches for how faculty can integrate information literacy into their courses. To learn more, read excerpts from the Framework.

Eligible Faculty

Faculty (either full-time or part-time) at The University of Scranton who want to strengthen students’ research skills in their discipline are eligible to apply for an Information Literacy Stipend. Faculty members who have previously received an Information Literacy Stipend are not eligible to receive a stipend for the same course except in the case of major revisions to the course.

Application Procedure

Interested faculty members should consult with the librarian liaison* to their department in advance of preparing a proposal. Proposals should not exceed two pages and should include the following:

  • Course name and number
  • Student learning outcomes related to information literacy
  • Assessment plan to determine how student learning outcomes will be evaluated
  • Projected timeline (Intersession/Spring 2017 or Summer/Fall 2017)
  • Name of the Library faculty member who has agreed to collaborate with you

* If unsure of the appropriate librarian, consult the Information Literacy Coordinator.

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed by the Library Advisory Committee’s Information Literacy subcommittee for the following components:

  • Student learning outcomes related to Information Literacy
  • Assessment plan to determine how student learning outcomes will be evaluated
  • Collaboration with a Librarian

Application Deadline for Intersession/Spring 2018 courses: Friday, November 3, 2017
Application Deadline for Summer/Fall 2018 courses: Friday, March 23, 2018

Stipend

A stipend of $1,000.00 will be awarded upon completion of the course, and submission by the faculty member of a report documenting the impact that the information literacy component had on student learning outcomes. Stipends are subject to taxes. Reports of the projects will be posted on the Library's website.
