Biography Index Past and Present (1984-present)

Cites biographical articles appearing in any of more than 3,000 periodicals and some 2,000 current books of individual and collective biography, as well as biographical material in otherwise non-biographical books. Besides biographies and autobiographies, you'll find citations to interviews, obituaries, and collections of letters, diaries, memoirs, juvenile literature, book reviews, bibliographies and exhibition reviews. People covered range from antiquity to the present and represent all fields and nationalities.

Biography Index Retrospective: 1946-1983

A comprehensive listing of biographical content to some 623,000 articles and book citations. It includes interviews and profiles of history-makers, covering 40 years. You will find citations to feature articles, biographies, obituaries, books and book parts. The number of people covered in the database is about 300,000. It covers asked-about public figures, including writers, artists, statesman, sports figures, politicians, religious leaders, scientists, educators, military leaders, teachers, actors, business people, and more.

Book Review Digest (H.W. Wilson):

Approximately 7,000 reviews annually of adult and children’s books. Critical evaluations from 100 American and Canadian periodicals in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and library review media. Only reviews that have appeared within 18 months of a book’s publication are included.. Coverage is from 1983 to the present. Updated monthly.

The Columbia Grangers World of Poetry

This database contains 30,000 poems. Biographies about the poets, commentaries on particular poems and a glossary are also available. Poems are linked to related poems by subject and by author.  Each commentary includes both an analysis by noted critics of poetry and a bibliography devoted to the poem.  

Credo Reference

Credo Reference is a full-text online reference service. The collection includes over three million entries from hundreds of well-regarded titles from some of world's the best reference publishers. Contains dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias, quotations and atlases, plus a wide range of subject-specific titles covering everything from art to accountancy, science to Shakespeare and law to literature.


Covers every doctoral dissertation completed in the U.S. at accredited institutions from 1861 to the present. Includes some master's theses and World Languages and Cultures dissertations. Updated monthly.  

Essay and General Literature Index (H.W. Wilson):

An index only database that provides access to essays in nearly 5,300 anthologies and collections. Coverage spans the entire range of humanities and social sciences, including literary works, art history, drama, and film. Coverage begins in 1985 to present.

Gale Literary Index

Gale's Literary Index is a searchable master index to the major literature products published by Gale. The index provides author and title listings to the literature series products published by Gale.  The volumes and page numbers for each article about an author or specific work are listed.

Humanities Source (EBSCO)

Developed from a merger of high-quality databases from EBSCO Publishing and H.W. Wilson, and including many unique sources that were never previously available, this database offers worldwide full-text content pertaining to literary, scholarly and creative thought.  Humanities Source provides full text—plus abstracts and bibliographic indexing—for the most noted scholarly sources in the humanities. In the First Person

In the First Person is a free, high quality, in-depth index of close to 4,000 collections of personal narratives in English from around the world. The index contains approximately 20,500 months of diary entries, 63,000 letter entries, and 17,000 oral history entries.

JSTOR (Full Text)

Provides full text access for scholarly journals in the areas of African-American studies, anthropology, Asian studies, ecology, economics, education, finance, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, political science, and sociology. The Life Science Collection is also available. This database covers a complete journal run from the first issue up to the most recent three to five years.

Middle English Compendium

The Middle English & Theatre Compendium provides a gateway to the Middle English & Theatre  Dictionary; a HyperBibliography of Middle English & Theatre  prose and verse; and the Corpus of Middle English & Theatre Prose and Verse.

MLA Directory of Periodicals

Over 5,500 titles of which over 4,400 are currently indexed. The entries list editorial addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, frequency of publication, descriptions of the periodicals' scopes, circulation figures, subscription prices and addresses, advertising information, peer review, and submission guidelines. The directory also provides statistics on how many articles and book reviews the periodicals publish each year, as well as how many are submitted.

MLA International Bibliography

The MLA International Bibliography provides a classified listing and subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics. It is compiled by the staff of the MLA Office of Bibliographic Information Services with the cooperation of more than 100 contributing bibliographers in the United States and abroad. The MLA International Bibliography annually indexes over 66,000 books and articles.

Oxford Bibliographies Online: Victorian Literature
