Learning Enrichment Specialist

Mary Ellen Pichiarello

As the Learning Enrichment Specialist, I am responsible for providing services to help students achieve academic success at the University of Scranton. My aim is to help students become self-regulated learners by establishing the optimum conditions for academic success. This is done by assessing the unique needs of the students and providing them with the necessary tools to enhance their overall educational experience. The strategies used may include identifying learning styles, improving organizational and time management skills, setting goals, keeping students motivated to achieve their academic goals. I may collaborate with the Reading Enrichment Specialist, Writing Center Consultants, faculty, student advisors and other University staff as necessary.

I am also responsible for coordinating academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities in accordance with federal legislation. In order to ensure that students with disabilities receive the appropriate services, I schedule individual meetings with them to discuss academic accommodations available through the CTE. My reason for doing this is to keep the lines of communication open between the student, faculty member, and myself to effectively meet the unique academic needs of each student served by the CTE.

I hold a B.A. in Health Services Administration from Marywood College and an M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Scranton. I am a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (C.R.C.) since 2006. I feel that I can achieve much more success in this position by collaborating with faculty and staff members on a regular basis to provide the best services to the students of the University of Scranton.

My favorite quote-Tuesdays with Morrie: “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” (Swartz, 1997)
