Faculty Guidelines for Accommodations

Faculty Responsibilities for Testing Accommodations

Faculty members are urged to comply with the following guidelines to assist students with documented disabilities who require academic accommodations (e.g., extended test taking time or use of a computer).

  1. The faculty member will receive a list of approved accommodations from the CTLE for students with disabilities.
  2. The CTLE will provide the approved testing accommodations in Loyola Science Center, 5th Floor.
  3. Faculty should forward the student examination to Mary Ellen Pichiarello or James Muniz in the CTLE 48 hours prior to the scheduled examination. This allows for the CTLE staff to implement appropriate accommodations. The exam may be sent via campus mail, delivered by faculty, administrative assistants, or work study students. The exam may also be e-mailed to ctletesting@scranton.edu.
  4. Under no circumstances should the students be allowed to bring their examinations to the CTLE.
  5. If faculty members do not submit a student’s examination to the CTLE by the specified exam time, the faculty member must make alternate testing arrangements.
  6. Completed examinations will be returned to the faculty member within 24 hours after the examination is administered.

Faculty Guidelines for Disabilities Accommodations

  1. Disability Accommodation Statement

    Be sure to include in your course syllabi a statement similar to the following: Special Needs and Accommodations: In order to receive appropriate accommodations, students with disabilities must register with the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence and provide relevant documentation. Students should contact Mary Ellen Pichiarello (Extension 4039) or James Muniz (Extension 4218) to schedule an appointment.

  2. First Day of Class Announcement

    As you review the syllabus for each class, note the above statement and invite students to meet you either during office hours or by appointment. These invitations are important in helping the student feel at ease and for encouraging self-identification. Due to confidentiality, the CTLE does not directly notify instructors of a student’s disability unless requested by the student.

  3. Obtain a Copy of the Faculty Notification Letter

    A student needing an accommodation(s) must provide the faculty member with a faculty notification letter from the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE). All students are instructed to schedule an appointment with a CTLE staff member at the beginning of the semester and meet with the faculty member after the next scheduled class or during office hours to review the accommodations. Students who ask for accommodations but do not have faculty notifications letters should be referred to the CTLE.

  4. Discuss Student Accommodations Request(s)

    Once the student provides the faculty member with a copy of the faculty notification letter, discuss with the student the specific accommodations requested for the course. Each faculty notification letter includes a list of recommended accommodations, based on documentation provided by the student. These accommodations may not automatically apply to every course or every assignment. Appropriate accommodations should be based on the faculty notification letter, the course requirements, and common sense.

  5. Consult with the CTLE staff when necessary

    If you have any questions regarding a requested accommodation, cannot reach mutual agreement with a student, or need other assistance, please contact the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE). The responsibility of postsecondary institutions to provide accommodations to students with disabilities derives principally from two federal laws: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (“Section 504”) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (“ADA”).

  6. Evaluate Accommodation Success

    Clearly, the student bears the main burden of evaluating whether an accommodation is succeeding. However, checking in with the student occasionally to monitor progress is helpful. Consistent follow through is important on any agreed accommodations, such as forwarding tests to the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) on time, providing written instructions for assignments, or assisting in recruiting note takers.

Requesting a Reasonable Accommodation

In order to receive disability-related accommodations and/or support services, the student must self-disclose the presence of a specific disability and provide the appropriate documentation to the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE). The CTLE will handle all accommodation requests on an individual basis to ensure the student’s needs are being met and the documentation supports the stated disability. If the documentation supports the requested accommodation as reasonable, then the requested accommodations may be granted. Incomplete documentation may delay this important process. Students are encouraged to be proactive. It is important to keep in mind that despite the existence of a qualifying disability, the requested accommodations may be denied if they are determined to be unreasonable or inappropriate.

The CTLE provides academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities in accordance with the ADA. These accommodations may include extended test taking time, computer use during testing, alternative test formats and readers. Students requesting test accommodations through CTLE must adhere to guidelines and access the on-line testing accommodation form to schedule examinations. Our goal in establishing these guidelines is to help the University community understand the role of the CTLE in providing academic accommodations for qualified students with disabilities.
