2013 CASE Professor of the Year

Dr. Rose Sebastianelli

Rose Sebastianelli arrived at the University of Scranton in 1988. She earned her Ph.D. in management science from the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University in 1989, and she holds a bachelor’s degree in geosciences, magna cum laude, from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 1996 she was named the Alperin Chair in Business Administration.

Dr. Sebastianelli has taught both core and major courses in the Kania School of Management, including Business Statistics, Quality Management and Business Forecasting Models at both the undergraduate and MBA levels. In addition, she teaches regularly for the online MBA program. She developed the course in Quality Management, which has evolved considerably since its initial offering in 1990, and is now designated as writing intensive. During her most recent sabbatical, she taught a version of this course to Chinese students at CUEB (Capital University of Economics and Business) in Beijing.

An active researcher throughout her career, Dr. Sebastianelli takes a scholarly approach to teaching. Not only does she engage in discipline specific research to advance knowledge in the field, but has also shared pedagogical ideas and teaching innovations with colleagues through publication and presentation. Approximately one quarter of her peer-reviewed articles are in teaching-related journals. She has also made it a priority to involve students in her research, through independent study, the Faculty Student Research Program (FSRP), and the President’s Fellowship for Summer Research. Approximately 15% of her 85 presentations at international, national and regional conferences are co-authored with students. In addition, she has contributed to a major textbook in business statistics published by Pearson, authoring an Ethics in Action feature that appears in each chapter, as well as authoring supplements such as test banks, power point slides and solutions manuals.

During her time at the University, Dr. Sebastianelli has served in several leadership roles, including Coordinator of the initial AACSB accreditation of KSOM, Acting Dean of KSOM, Acting Dean of the Graduate School and Director of Research. Many of her service activities have been and continue to be student-centered. She currently sits on the Board of Advisors for GiveGab, a start-up company that provides a social networking site organized around non-profit and charitable organizations.

Her honors and awards include being named KSOM Professor of the Year (2005, 2007 and 2008), the Edward Gannon, S.J., Memorial Award for Teaching (2009), the Provost’s Award for Excellence in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (2009), and being named an Alperin Teaching Fellow (2009 – 2011). Dr. Sebastianelli is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Nu and Pro Deo et Universitate. Her professional memberships include the Decision Sciences Institute, American Society for Quality, International Institute of Forecasters, and the Association for Operations Management. She resides in South Abington Township with her husband, Attorney Louis Cimini.
