Dave Gardner, Faculty - Student Research Project

Since the fall of 2008, I have been involved with a research project, advised by Dr. Joseph Connolly at the University of Scranton, examining the physics of bicycles. The part of the project which I have been in charge of examines the effects of air resistance on bicycles, using Newton’s laws to predict the forces of air resistance at different speeds, and then using differential equations to model the velocity of the bike. This information allows very accurate calculations of rider power output to be made. The theoretical predictions were confirmed by experimental results conducted by myself and Dr. Connolly during the summer and fall of 2009. I have presented this research to the physics department at the University of Scranton, and will be presenting it at the American Physical Society’s national meeting in Washington DC in February
