Before Arrival in the U.S.

Obtaining a visa

Every new international student or exchange visitor who wishes to begin an “initial” program of study or research is required to pay a Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  This fee, which is called the SEVIS I-901 Fee, must be paid before the visa interview. Information concerning the process for paying the SEVIS fee can be found on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website.

New students should schedule an appointment for a visa interview at the nearest United States Consulate or Embassy. Students should bring their passport, proof of finances and I-20/DS-2019 to the interview to obtain a student visa.  For more information on obtaining a US visa, please visit the following Department of State or contact the nearest U.S. Consulate. The cost of processing the visa will be approximately $140.00 USD. Upon entry to the U.S. students must present their I-20/DS-2019, and passport to an Immigration Inspector who will date stamp the documents.  See the chart in obtaining a visa and entering the United States.

All students should inform the Office of Global Education (OGE) of their planned arrival in Scranton, so arrangements can be made to meet you and transport you to The University.
